The Basics of Poker
Poker is a card game in which players place bets against one another based on the value of their hand. Normally, chips (either made of plastic or ceramic) are used to represent bets, but money may also be used. Players place these chips in the pot when they call, check, fold or make an all-in bet. The player with the highest-ranking hand wins all the money in the pot.
The player sitting in the first-to-act position is known as the button. The button rotates around the table after each round of betting, moving to the player to their left after the pre-flop betting phase is complete. During the pre-flop betting phase, each player is dealt 2 cards that are hidden from the other players, called their hole or pocket cards. Players use these cards along with 3 community cards that are revealed in the center of the table during the flop to create their best 5-card poker hand.
