The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game that involves betting and winning. Players are dealt cards one at a time, and the highest hand wins the pot. A poker hand is composed of five cards. The rank of each individual card determines the best hand.

There are four basic types of poker hands. They are: pairs, flush, straight, and five of a kind. These types of hands are ranked from Ace to King.

When two or more players have a pair of the same type, the high card breaks the tie. If no pair is made, the player with the lowest odd card wins the tie.

A five of a kind is a combination of five cards of the same rank. It is sometimes known as a quad, and in some parts of the world it is referred to as poker.

Fours of a kind is a combination of four cards of the same rank. Sometimes it is called a “quad.” This type of hand is not possible in standard poker. However, a wild card can make this the highest possible hand.

Flush is a hand of five cards of the same suit. A flush wins if all of the cards are of the same suit. For example, if the flush is 6-6-4-3-2, the fifth card is any other card.

Straight is a hand of five consecutive cards. For instance, a five of a kind beats a straight flush.

Five of a kind is the best hand in poker. In some games, the ace may be treated as the lowest card.
