The Basics of Poker
Typical poker games award the pot to the highest hand. In a tie, the high card breaks the tie. When there are more than two people tied for the highest card, the high card outside of four of a kind wins.
In poker, players have five cards. They use these cards to make the best hand possible. A straight is a set of five consecutive cards that are all the same suit. This is not the same as a flush, as a flush contains all the cards of the same suit.
Some poker games do not consider flushes or straights. They may not give the pot to the highest hand, but instead to the lowest. They also divide the pot between the hands with the best and the lowest cards.
Some poker games also have wild cards. These are cards that can be used to supplement any other card. They can take any suit.
Some poker games have a button, which is a plastic disk placed in the center of the table. The button is passed clockwise after every hand. This indicates the dealer.
There are two decks of cards that are usually used in Texas Hold’em. The back colours of these decks are different. The game is played with five or six players.
The player who opens the pot is usually the dealer. This player must then show a “Jacks or Better” to other players. They can then take new cards from the top of the deck.
