Poker is a card game played between two or more players. Typically a minimum amount of money (chips) is placed into the pot before each hand, and then players bet in turn. The highest hand wins the pot.<\/p>\n
Each player is dealt two cards face down, these are known as their hole cards. They can then choose to play or fold. When it is their turn to bet they can raise or call. If they raise the other players must match or higher their bet.<\/p>\n
The dealer then deals three more cards face up on the table, these are community cards that anyone can use to make their final five card hand. After another round of betting the highest hand wins the pot.<\/p>\n
Some people spend too much time looking for unconscious tells in their opponents but this is a mistake. It is far more important to categorize players into broad categories such as tight-aggressive or loose-passive, rather than focusing on individual, often unreliable, physical tells.<\/p>\n
It is also important to pay attention to how your opponent bets. If they always call preflop then it is likely they do not have a strong hand and you should be able to bluff more effectively against them. In addition, if they often raise with weak hands it is probably best to avoid them unless you have a very strong one yourself.
