Poker is a card game in which players wager money, called chips, on the outcome of a hand. It is played in a number of different ways, but the goal is always to make the best poker hand possible.<\/p>\n
During each betting interval one player places chips into the pot, representing his or her bet. Then, in turn, each player must either call that bet by putting the same amount of chips into the pot as his or her predecessors, raise it (put more than that), or drop (fold).<\/p>\n
When a new poker hand is dealt, players reveal their cards face up and evaluate them according to the rules of the particular variant being played. The player with the highest-ranked poker hand wins the pot.<\/p>\n
A high-card poker hand is any five cards of consecutive rank, or of a sequence and suits that match, with the exception of two pairs of cards, in which case the higher pair wins. Ties are broken by the highest unmatched cards or secondary pairs, in a full house (three matching cards of one rank and two matching cards of another rank) or a flush.<\/p>\n
Emotional and superstitious beginner players almost always lose at poker, while players who take a calm, detached approach to the game usually break even or win at a much faster pace than their inexperienced peers. Many players develop their strategy through detailed self-examination or by discussing their hands and playing styles with fellow players for a more objective look at their strengths and weaknesses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
